American Ballet Theatre's The Nutcracker at Peter Jay Sharp Theater (BAM) in Brooklyn.


The Nutcracker is a two-act.  Originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov.  The libretto is adapted from ETA, Hoffman's story "The Nutcracker ans the Mouse".  It was give it's first premiere at "The Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, Russia on Sunday Dec 18, 1892.

The original Production was not a success.  The Nutcracker has enjoyed enormous popularity since the late 60's, primarily during the Christmas Holiday and is now performed by countless ballet companies.

After the first  building burned down on Montague St in 1903, Brooklyn Borough President Martin W. Littleton led prominent Brooklynites to the task of rehousing Brooklyn's Cultural Academy and it's educational partner, the Brooklyn Institute.

The major space in the building is the grand opera house featuring two balconies and 2,200 seats.  A concert hall, used for both musical concerts and lectures, had it's entrance from the main lobby.  the space has been subdivided into several movie theaters.  some of the original detail has been preserved.  a ornate ballroom room on the second floor was redesign in 1973 as the Lepercg space.

The inaugural gala featured Enrico Caruso and Geraldine Farr.  Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke in 1940.  From the beginning BAM"s main building has witness history making performance and lecture by a who's who of Artists, Historical figures and official.  In addition becoming the home of adventurous Artist, Audience and ideas.
